In Some Goddam Places , It's Hard To Be Woman.

Yesterday , I watched the presidenti of Afghanistan being interviewed by CBS' Schiffer . It was a good interview with excellent views by Pres. Karzai . He talked about the progress made by the Afghan government since kicking the Taliban out of power . Among these ' progress ' is that thousands more children go to school now when it numbered only like 700 before . And only boys at that ! It's really unfortunate that in some countries even in this day and age , women are treated as 2nd class citizens. I recalled an incident that happened in Saudi Arabia . Over there , women are not allowed to drive anything . One time , a group of women staged a rally ( illegal over there ) to protest this rule . A handful of brave ladies drove their cars ( I should say , their fathers' cars ) around the block where we reside and defiantly did this for a few rounds . I do not know what happened next . There was no news of this event in the papers the following days . I just know that the rule stays up to this day. However, during the 1st Gulf War , American women soldiers went around driving to the consternation of the religious police . They can't do anything about it.
When I was a small kid, we often see Chinese ladies with small feet . The took , obviuosly , very small steps on their way to whatever destinations they were going to . When I asked my father how come their feet are small . He said it's to prevent them from wandering afar from their husband's place . These ladies were fitted with steel shoes when they were small girls keeping their feet from growing !

Incredible stories. I remember hearing about the US Military women "upsetting" the locals when they drove - I think the old series JAG had an episode touching on that. Anyway, yes, it is horrible how humans treat one another - women, children, men...

p.s. thank you for the poem in my blog comments :)

About chinese women before and after 1920. It was not for "running away" from a husband. You should read "East wind-West wind" from Pearl.S.Buck. Chinese way of living and traditions could not be compared to western way of life. The little feet were considered as beauty and the woman with the smallest feet had more chance to be married to a rich man. They suffered voluntarily to get their feet as small as possible and sometimes when they were old the feet just felt off because of the blood circulation.

With the saudi arabian women there is a lot of hypocrete involved ! Inside the country and officially they are not "free" at least in western eyes. But outside the country they are as free as I am I can tell you ! I met a saudi arabian woman at the beach in egypt and she was wearing a bath suit and after a little chat, it turned out that she was a member of the royal family and a princess ! Another one was here in Waterloo accompanied by 4 body guards and bought almost the whole jewelry in the shop of my friend and 3 watches for 250.000 $ each ! (wonder wy the oil prices are so high) So I guess you are right concerning the arabic women in a lower social class (as it is often even in western countries in little villages) but it's better not to generalize. But I agree with the poor afganistan women. And what yellowdog granny said is very true ! There are still a lot of discriminations in western countries too !

It's definitely a very sad, controlled, manipulative situation! I feel awful for them!
